Cumbrian teacher sentenced for sexual activity with girl

A woman teacher who admitted sexual activity with a girl has been sentenced by a court.

Hayley Southwell, 27, was today given a 12-month prison term, suspended for two years and put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years after pleading guilty, at a previous hearing at Carlisle Crown Court, to sexual touching.

Southwell, of Birkby, near Maryport, had been a teacher at Nelson Thomlinson School, Wigton, at the time of the offence. The victim is now a former pupil.

The offence was carried out between May 1 last year and January 17 this year.
