Ricky Holt, 21, of Maryport, appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court after being charged with assaulting Emma Harrison on December 23 last year.

Holt pleaded not guilty and will go on trial at the same court on March 21.

Holt hit the headlines last October after he said that he overslept and missed a lift to work with two friends, who were killed in a crash that morning on the A596 at Crosby Villa.

Holt revealed he would have been in the car that day with best friend Jamie Edmondson, 22, and 18-year-old Todd Ridley – travelling from their home town of Maryport to work at Carlisle’s Cavaghan & Gray food factory – had his alarm clock gone off as it should.

Both his friends died after their Honda Civic was in collision with a Rover. Its driver, 47-year-old Michael Harrison, was also killed.
