Cumbrian pub's festive extra hours bid rejected

A Whitehaven nightspot has failed in its bid to stay open until 3.30am on two days over Christmas.
Cap’n Senny’s in Senhouse Street wanted to sell alcohol until 3am with a 3.30am closing time on December 22 and on December 27.
However, licensing committee chairman Peter Connolly said this would have lengthened the time people living in the area had to had to endure disturbance.
Under its current permit Senny’s is allowed to serve until 2am and stay open until 2.30am.
Chris Pool, for the Whitehaven nightspot, said it was a special time and people wanted to enjoy themselves. He did not think asking for one hour extra, on only two nights over the festive period, was unreasonable.
But Sgt Ashley Bennett objected to the extension, because of the record of drink related incidents in the area.
Representatives of Brackenthwaite home for the elderly near the pub said the situation where people were emerging from the place at 2.30am at weekends was bad enough.
