A singing duo have written a Christmas song which they hope will keep the X Factor single off the number one spot.
Steve McCormick and Rob Millican, who work at the Rural Payments Agency in Carlisle, have written It’s Our Christmas Song (Keep X Factor Off Number One) as a charity single.
The duo, who have been working on their song for about a month, want to be number one this Christmas instead of the usual X Factor winner.
Steve, 36, of Kirkbride, said: “We’re just sick of all the hype and nonsense surrounding X Factor and we’re tired of it so we decided to do something about it.
“Our song really is a Christmas song. All of our verses are about Christmas and to us it’s about being with your family.”
Steve plays the guitar on the single and Rob sings and did all the animation with help from his girlfriend, who did some of the artwork.
The single, which is available to download on iTunes and Amazon from Monday, will raise cash for Cancer Research UK, the NSPCC and the Eden Valley Hospice. The estimated cost of the download is 69p.
Steve, who went to the former Morton School, said: “The charities are close to our hearts.

“Both Rob and I know people affected by cancer. My nana spent her last few days in the Eden Valley Hospice which is an amazing place. I think most people round here know how fantastic the staff are that work there and what an important community facility it is.
“We think the NSPCC is an important charity too.
“We just want to raise some money for charity and if we can scrape into the Top 40 that would be brilliant.”
In 2009 rock band Rage Against the Machine won the most competitive battle in years for the Christmas number one.
The band’s single, Killing In The Name, beatX Factor winner Joe McElderry’s The Climb to clinch the top spot.
Their success followed a Facebook campaign designed to prevent another X Factor number one.
