Cumbrian mum told to pay back crime cash or face longer jail term

A mother must pay back more than £3,300 she gained from crime.

Lucy Bennett, 35, of Burnmoor Avenue in Whitehaven, was jailed for 21 months in June for possessing controlled drugs with intent to supply and concealing the proceeds of crime.

Bennett, a mum-of-two, agreed to peddle amphetamine and mephedrone in Whitehaven because the dealers to whom she owed thousands had threatened to target her family.

Police had found more than £4,000 in cash and drugs, including mephedrone – also known as plant food – and amphetamine, with a street value of £8,000, buried in the back garden.

At Carlisle Crown Court, Bennett made a brief appearance to listen to the proceedings. Alan Lovett said the available sum to pay back is £3,335.

The money must be paid within 28 days or Bennett faces another three months in prison.
