A Sellafield worker who sold the banned drug mephedrone has been told by a judge to hand over £3,660 of his illegal profits.

Carl Halbert, 26, who admitted being concerned in the supply of the Class B drug, told police he bought it so he could sell it to 10 of his friends and fund his own use of it.

The offence came to light after police raided Halbert’s former home in Workington, which he later described as being a “party house”.

At Carlisle Crown Court, a judge heard an application under the Proceeds of Crime Act, designed to strip convicted criminals of profits their crimes may have generated.

The court heard that Halbert’s criminal benefit from his crime – the worth of the illegal activity he was involved in – had been agreed at £10,400.

Judge Paul Batty QC ruled that Halbert’s assets now amounted to £3,660.

A confiscation order for that amount was approved by the judge. In November last year, Halbert, formerly of Windsor Road, Workington, was given a suspended nine months jail term. At the time, his barrister saidHalbert was relieved his cycle of drug use had been broken.
