Cumbrian man was drugs gang courier, jury decides

A Workington man has been convicted of acting as a drugs courier as part of a wider criminal enterprise cracked by police.

James Moore, 33, of Forge Hill Park, was found guilty following a trial linked to a case involving a gang intent on supplying drugs on an industrial scale.

Moore, who is being sentenced today, was found guilty by a jury of assisting in the supply of class A or B drugs after standing trial with another man at Carlisle Crown Court.

The court had previously heard that Cooke had travelled outside Cumbria to transport the substances as part of a wider operation.

Jurors had also been told that police surveillance was used to crack a gang.

Officers tracked the movements of several gang members on June 11 last year. They used the radio towers linked to their mobile phones as well as information from seized devices.

During the trial, Alex Leach, prosecuting, said: “James Moore played a supporting role. On June 11 he travelled from Workington to Newcastle and back to courier drugs.”

Ten members of the gang admitted their guilt before the trial but jurors were told this did not automatically mean Moore and the other man on trial were guilty.

The jury had not reached a verdict yesterday on the other man on trial.

Dale Cooke, 32, of Reins Road in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, denies conspiracy to supply class A drugs. His trial continues today.
