Cumbrian man punched walls in Carlisle hospital after going there for treatment

A 21-year-old man shouted at hospital staff and punched a wall after going to A&E because he vomited blood.

James Geoffrey Poddington, of Priory Road, off Wigton Road, Carlisle, went to the Cumberland Infirmary in the early hours of June 30, city magistrates heard.

He had been drinking in Carlisle when he became ill and went to hospital but started shouting at staff.

His girlfriend and another friend came to see how he was and they started arguing, leading to him punching a wall and damaging plaster.

The court heard how police officers who were there on an unrelated matter heard shouting and went to investigate.

Poddington was arrested and admitted he was not behaving in a suitable way. His solicitor Martin McAllister said he wanted to apologise for his behaviour. He said he had an undiagnosed illness and was worried about vomiting blood.

Poddington, who admitted criminal damage, was fined £73 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge. He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to the NHS.
