Cumbrian man facing 17 sex charges has case sent to crown court

A man from Cleator Moor charged with 17 sexual offences spanning a 35-year period has had his case sent to the crown court.

Stephen Taylor, 58, of Leconfield Street, Cleator Moor, appeared before West Cumbria magistrates. No formal pleas were entered.

He is accused of 11 counts of rape, including one of a girl under 16, two of indecent assault on a girl under 16, one of sexual abuse, two of grooming and one of indecency with a girl under 14.

The offences are alleged to involve five females, the youngest 13 years old, and to have occurred in Egremont, Whitehaven and Workington between 1978 and 2013.

The first hearing at the higher court will be on August 4.

Taylor was released on bail.
