Cumbrian man denies schoolgirl sex abuse and downloading child porn

A man has gone on trial accused of sexually abusing a schoolgirl and using his computer to download thousands of child pornography images.

Joseph Moody, 58, of Scotch Street, Whitehaven, denies eight specimen charges of sexual activity with the schoolgirl over a three-year period and two further counts of abusing the girl when she was seven.

All the offences are said to have happened in the Workington area.

Moody has also pleaded not guilty to 23 charges of using his computer to download more than 6,000 pornoraphic images of children on dates during 2012 and 2013.

Of these, 182 were images categorised as level 4 – the second most serious level – and six are alleged to have been extreme pornographic images, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

Opening the case for the prosecution, David Bentley said the sexual activity allegations were all specimen charges, designed to reflect a course of conduct.

The child involved was aged between seven and 10 when she was abused, he said.

Referring to the child pornography allegations, he said: “There are in excess of 6,500 images recovered from computer equipment taken from this defendant’s home address.”

The case continues.
