A man has been put on the sex offenders’ register after admitting sexually assaulting a sleeping 16-year-old girl.
Stuart Gorman, 19, of Coniston Drive, Workington, pleaded guilty at Carlisle Crown Court to assaulting the girl on four separate occasions between September 1 and December 20 last year.
He did so, barrister Kim Whittlestone told the court, on the basis that since the girl had been asleep at the time Gorman could not reasonably have believed she was consenting.
But, she said, it was important to note that the girl accepted that he had stopped as soon as she had woken up and told him to.
Gorman’s not guilty plea to one charge of rape was accepted by the prosecution.
He was bailed for background reports and will be sentenced on November 16.
