Cumbrian hospitals staff must work Queen's Jubilee for no extra pay

While street parties get underway across the county to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee many Cumbrian health staff will find themselves having to work – and for no extra pay.

Have your say

working for nhs on a bank holiday is both pleasure and pain

People should stop whinging and be just be thankful that they have a job. They're getting a day off in lieu, what more do they want?

This day is only classed as a public holiday, not a bank holiday there is no law that says everybody gets it off it is up to the employer, many many people will be working without extra pay or a day in lieu, the day off will also cost this country which is on its knees a fortune

Lets face it, most people do not think NHS staff work hard. After saying this, if you see workers chatting or having a cup of tea you may think this. However, the chat may be work related, the cup of tea may be the first the've had all day. People standing around a hole in the street, they get paid a good wage, are they skiving or discussing the danger of a potential gas leak, guess what most people would think. I could go on compairing this scenario but i would have to include every kind of employment. People, most nhs staff couldn't give two hoots what you think, we know how hard we work and you're entitled to your opinion, and i hope the negative outlook of some posters doesn't end up affecting their health, you may have to come into contact with the people you critisise.

If we all petition HM the Queen, perhaps she will pay all of our overtime hours worked.

After all, it's her special occasion.

Doesn't the birthday boy (or girl) usually buy a round of drinks or supply a cake or something similar?

Blimey - how people diversify their comments. I've had appalling service from some NHS staff and fantastic service too. It's as individual as people who work. I wish more people had your attitude A staff nurse, and nobody should have to be insulted. There are people who post comments simply for controversy and they will be absolutely jealous of you for having jobs. That said, no extra pay for a bank holiday is just no worry is it. I don't get it either in my employment. I just get on with my job, and am thankful for a good salary - probably like most NHS staff so don't listen, just carry on trying to improve the service for which you work. You take home the pay - not the mindless few who shout on here!

I am shocked at the comment made by the person who said all we do is drink tea and chat up Doctors. How dare you! What an insult to all the NHS Staff who work hard.I dont care about having time off. We operate 24hrs a day, 52 weeks of the year.Get a grip will you. You havent a clue!

NHS workers should be payed a premium for working public holidays.
Shops should be closed on Public holidays to allow staff time with their friends and family without prejudice.
Business' that want to open on public holidays should pay their staff a premium. A level playing field.
