A project to tackle flooding in Dearham is being expanded to help more homes.

United Utilities wants to carry out the work to stop more homes being hit by sewer flooding.

The company had been due to start on site this year but engineers have postponed the work temporarily after consulting residents to allow more people to benefit from the scheme.

A number of villagers are now being asked to take part in a survey so that sewer design experts can get a full picture of the work that will be needed and include all customers in the finished scheme.

Project manager Sean McGahan said it had become clear during discussions with local people that the project had the potential to help more people than first thought.

He said: “We rely on people reporting problems on our sewer network to us.

“It became clear when we started talking to people in Dearham that some flooding problems had not been reported to us.

“By expanding our original scheme we can make sure as many people feel the benefit as possible,” added Mr McGahan.
