Cumbrian court warns rapist he faces big jail term

A man has been warned to expect a long prison sentence after pleading guilty to seven rapes.

The charges were among a catalogue of sex crimes which Christopher Neal Holmes, of The Grange, Hillcrest, Whitehaven, admitted at Carlisle Crown Court.

The 46-year-old – smartly dressed in a pale blue shirt and dark blue tie – pleaded guilty to seven charges of rape, five of indecent assault and one of gross indecency.

He pleaded not guilty to two further charges – one each of rape and indecent assault – and these are likely to be left lying on the court file without being proceeded with. Holmes, ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register, will be sentenced on Thursday.
