A chef from Silloth was shocked when she picked up the phone and was asked to take part in a national television programme.

Val Nattress: Shocked at call

Val Nattress, co-owner of the Gincase in Silloth, will be on ITV next year as part of Ade Edmondson’s Ade In Britain series.

The Gincase was selected to be on the show due to its connections with the Cumbrian recipe Rum Nicky.

Val gave Edmondson a demonstration of how to make Rum Nicky and the filming was done nearly in one take.

Val said: “I always think of him as mad Viv from The Young Ones but you couldn’t possibly be like that.

“I was a bit nervous but he was so nice. He chatted along and put me at ease. I wasn’t really expecting it and I was a bit shocked when they rang.”

Ade In Britain is themed around Edmondson touring Britain in a Mini to sample the best of British food. In the first series he travelled from north Wales, up the Lancashire coast and to the Peak District.

In various locations Edmondson meets local producers and cooks up local dishes and delicacies The meals made included Welsh mussels with pork and leek and Kent cherry batter pudding.

Edmondson originally shot to fame in the early 1980s when he starred as Vyvyan in The Young Ones alongside Rik Mayall.

The two then teamed up again to make the show Bottom, which ran from 1991 until 1995.

The show filmed at the Gincase focuses on the rum trade coming through Whitehaven port and the effect that had on Cumbrian cuisine.
