A beauty queen has overcome cruel internet bullies to scoop a top award.
Roseanne Jefferson, from Wigton, picked up the ‘Miss Personality’ award in the Miss Cumbria competition.
The 18-year-old also finished second overall and will represent the county in the Miss England semi-finals if winner Charlotte Bacon is unable to attend.
But Roseanne was subjected to a series of hurtful jibes on Facebook and Twitter from people she thought were her friends in the run-up to the competition.
The insults were aimed at her failure to win any awards or secure a finishing place at last year’s contest.
Roseanne explained: “They were saying that only pretty people enter the competition so why was I entering, and saying that I wasn’t going to win.
“It made me question whether it was worth taking part and would I get even more stick if I didn’t win?
“To think these people were supposed to be my close friends – it was heartbreaking.
“But there were still quite a few people who were really positive and encouraging me and it made me more determined to carry on.”
Roseanne is now planning on competing in the Miss North West contest next May.
Roseanne, who works as a teaching assistant at Rosley Primary School near Wigton, also praised her pupils who made an ‘eco outfit’ using recycled bottle tops, and created a banner saying ‘Good Luck Miss Jefferson’.

Have your say
Being from Wigton myself I think that it is hard when people do that to one of their own. Roseanne you are beautiful inside and out and you deserve all your awards and greatness. Keep your head held high and know that in ten years time you will have achieved something in your life while those who jibe will remain exactly where they are - nowhere. WELL DONE LASS!
Such an obviously good looking girl, and no doubt a nice person with it. Bullies are almost always weak cowards, and they probably bully because they have bigger problems in their heads than the person they try to bully - so they can't stand others being happy.Roseanne, take a little bit of advice from one of the most intelligent men of the 20th Century, Bertrand Russell;"If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have a paradise in a few years."
"Contempt for happiness is usually contempt for other people's happiness.""Next to enjoying ourselves, the next greatest pleasure consists in preventing others from enjoying themselves"
