Music, jewellery, clothing and advice were on show at a gay pride festival in Carlisle.
X Factor‘s Kitty Brucknell and Craig Cotton, as well as Britain’s Got Talent stars The Mend, performed on Saturday night at the Swallow Hilltop Hotel in Carlisle, while the day was focussed more on socialising and providing information.
An array of stalls including those giving information on sexual health and emotional support were set up in one room while another was dedicated to selling LGBT-friendly goods.
Friends wandered around, curious to see what was on show at the festival, which attracted visitors from across the country.
Organiser Pam Eland said: “We hold these events to show support to the LGBT community, and to try to make people feel supported.
“Another part of it is to raise awareness and challenge homophobia.
“There’s also things like raising AIDS and HIV awareness.”
The theme of the event was health and it was this that led to organisations like the Samaritans setting up a stall to offer support.
Volunteer Debbie Wood said: “We get people who come to share their feelings even at an open event like this.
“The Samaritans is a refuge for a lot of people and you notice men find it more difficult. It’s astounding what you hear at times but it’s very rewarding.”
Friends and Carlisle residents Charlotte Graham and Laura Bingham, both 16, said they were enjoying the day. Charlotte explained: “It’s the first time we’ve been to something like this.
“We’re here with friends and just sitting down listening to the music.
“We have had a look around the stalls and we’re looking forward to the music later.”
Joanne Towndrow had travelled up from York in the morning to sell her jewellery at the show, and said she enjoyed the atmosphere.
“They’re family days and that’s what I like.
“This is our second year and a lot of people are into the glamorous stuff we sell.
“We have always supported LGBT events like these.”
