Cumbria's Tim Farron favourite to lead Lib Dems if Clegg goes

Cumbrian MP Tim Farron is being tipped as the favourite to take the Lib Dem reins if and when Nick Clegg goes.

Tim Farron: ’Any cuts in milk prices hurt farmers’

After catastrophic European election results where the Liberals lost all but one of their MEPS – including the north eest’s Chris Davies after 16 years in the role – there have been calls from within his own party for Mr Clegg to step aside.

Mr Farron, Westmorland MP, has remained publicly supportive of Mr Clegg, saying it would be ‘wrong for the party to turn its back on him’, and praising his ‘bravery’ for going head-to-head with UKIP on the thorny issue of Europe.

And Mr Farron told the BBC the idea of people calling for a leadership election was “the silliest idea I’ve heard in my politicial career.”

“It’s just not serious politics,” he said.

A number of national betting chains have Farron out front ahead of another favourite, business secretary Vince Cable, and Danny Alexander, current chief secretary to the treasurer.

Betfair had Farron at odds of 13/8 and at William Hill was 6/4.
