Cumbria's Lord Lieutenant calls for end of use of empire in honour titles

Cumbria's Lord Lieutenant has called for an end to the use of empire in honour titles.

Have your say

Just abolish what I think is a method instigated to keep the general public in their 'place',i.e. the class system is alive and kicking, and should be kicked out entirely.

It seems an entirely appropriate proposition considering the "Empire" is very much moribund. Get rid of the whole shambolic system and have something like the Order of Windsor (in the gift of the monarch) or the Order of British Merit? Just a thought

Why are people hell bent on destroying our history. If ethnic minorities object to our history they would be better off staying in their own country. We have a great history in many ways some good and some bad but its ours and should not be deleted.

Queen Vicky who ruled over the British Empire will be 200 in 2018 do we celebrate her birth ?

I don't suppose many would even raise a toast to her successful reign. Let alone, those who created it and was it not, a certain age group that lost the empire. I agree with Private Hook (VC) in the Zulu battles "Who gives a ...... dam".

Queen Victoria in Carlisle's newly signed Bitts Park or what was Victoria Park.

Is our 'Lord-Lieutenant' going to drop his imperial title too? Or is he just not wanting 'commoners' to have fancy titles?

Personally I agree with him though. It's an out-moded system that needs bringing into line with the modern world. A bit of transparency as to who gets the honours and why would be good too. Ditch the House of Lords and all that gubbins.

Actually, ditch the whole system and re-invent it. It's rotten to the core.

Bit by bit, they are chipping away at everything that is British.

Just leave it alone.

I would be honoured to be even considered to receive one of these...there's something patriotic about the 'british empire' and I would vote for it to stay the way it is. If the government had it's own way I am sure it would be called something like 'The Barclay Card Award/Medal'. I do think that Cameron is being daft by reintroducing a class based award though.
