Three cars were seized in a police crackdown on motoring offences in west Cumbria.

Officers targeted rogue drivers at Cleator Moor and Parton, near Whitehaven, with number plate recognition technology designed to single out offenders.

Those taking to the road without insurance were among those police were looking for after information showed a rise in those flouting the law in Cleator Moor.

Fines were handed out for other motoring offences, such as driving without enough tread on tyres.

Those cars that were seized face being scrapped if drivers do not now abide by the law, said officers.

Sergeant Darren Bawden said: “Vehicles will not be released until fully covered by insurance. If the owners don’t insure them they will be disposed of.”

West Cumbria’s roads policing unit and those working the automatic number plate recognition cameras were involved in the operation, carried out late last week.

Thirty-five vehicles were stopped after more than 9,400 registration checks were carried out.

Officers said the operations are run continually.
