Cumbria police investigate BNP election leaflet

Police are investigating complaints about a British National Party election leaflet inMaryport.

The leaflet, issued ahead of yesterday’s Cumbria County Council poll, claims that Labour candidates paid Polish people small amounts of cash to deliver election propaganda.

Beside this paragraph is a drawing of a monkey delivering Labour leaflets.

The leaflet says: “Labour has given the Poles our kids’ houses.”

Barbara Cannon, the Labour agent in Allerdale, said the leaflet appeared to contravene the Public Order Act, which prohibits publication of threatening, abusive or insulting material likely to stir racial hatred.

She said she had referred the leaflet to the police and the election returning officer for advice.

She also notified Workington MP Sir Tony Cunningham, who had complained to the police, the returning officer and notified the acting chief constable.

A police spokesman confirmed that the force was investigating but said no arrests had been made.

BNP spokesman Clive Jefferson said he had spoken to the Polish people who told him that they were delivering Labour pamphlets for money and that he had been assured of the facts by “Labour insiders”. The BNP has mounted a concerted campaign in Maryport where it has candidates in both electoral divisions.

Party leader Nick Griffin visited this week and was campaigning in the town yesterday.

Eric Teasdale, of Ewanrigg Brow, said he and his son Darren had been delivering pamphlets for Labour. He added: “I have lived in Maryport all my life. I am not Polish and neither is my son – and nor did we get paid for helping with the leaflets.”
