Police across Cumbria are searching for a BMW car following a serious road crash.

It is believed the vehicle may have been involved in the collision on the A66 in which three people were hurt.

Appeals for the driver to come forward have been unsuccessful, prompting officers across the county to try and track it down.

Members of the roads policing units, specialist teams, detectives and neighbourhood bobbies are all working to locate the blue car.

Inspector Andy Wilkinson again urged the BMW driver to come forward.

“We are progressing numerous lines of inquiry to trace the driver of a blue BMW that was travelling along the A66 when the collision took place.

"It is possible that the driver is unaware that a collision took place but it is vital that we trace this vehicle and the driver, in case they have important information about the incident."

And he added: “We have also received video footage captured by a passing goods vehicle which has an image of the BMW which we are enhancing.

“If you were driving a blue BMW car along the A66, please contact us immediately on 101. Or, if you witnessed the collision and haven’t yet spoken to police, please come forward.”

Two vans - a Peugeot panel van and a Vauxhall Vivaro - travelling in opposite directions collided at about 10.30am last Thursday (February 14) about five miles west of Rheged.

A passenger in the Vauxhall, a 23-year-old man from Carlisle, was flown to the James Cook hospital in Middlesbrough with what have been described as very serious injuries.

He was today said to be in a serious but stable condition.

The van driver, a Carlisle man, aged 53, was discharged from the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, after treatment.

The Peugeot driver, a 33-year-old man from Preston, was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary and discharged after treatment for back and rib injuries.
