Crooked financial adviser 'cleaned out' elderly blind couple

A crooked financial adviser who stole a total of more than £150,000 from his clients has been jailed for 32 months.

Over three years, 47-year-old John Mark Earl took £68,000 from an elderly blind couple who trusted him to look after their financial affairs.

And he took £85,500 from a woman in her mid sixties, who thought he was investing her life savings on her behalf.

Both of his victims looked upon him as a friend.

Carlisle Crown Court heard he "effectively cleaned them out", taking their entire life savings.

Earl, a father of four who was said to live in "a substantial and impressive home" in Main Street, Brampton, pleaded guilty to theft.

He is now likely to be made bankrupt.
