The company announced today that it has bought Compass House, on Cooper Way, in the Parkhouse area of Kingstown, Carlisle.

John Leveson, deputy chief executive for CBS, reassured customers that it will keep both branches of the building society in the city centre, but staff working in the headquarters above the branch on Fisher Street will all be relocated.

He explained that over the past 30 years, the business has grown “substantially”.

“Our current head office was built in the early 1980s for a building society that offered only a basic range of savings and mortgage products,” he said.

“Today we offer a significantly wider range of products and services. As a result, we have almost 200 staff working from these premises, and unfortunately we have outgrown our home.”

He added: “Moving to a new base in the north of Carlisle represents an exciting new chapter for the Cumberland.

“This move is essential if we are to continue growing the business, which in turn should lead to increased employment, which will have a positive impact on the Carlisle economy.”

Mr Leveson said the announcement to staff had been “well-received”.

CBS owns the current Fisher Street building, and various options are now being investigated for use of the upper floors. This could include office space, retail or even a residential development.

The first staff are due to begin moving into the new premises in the spring, with the relocation being completed by the summer.

Good to hear some good banking news from a building society that kept its feet firmly on the floor.
If there were more local banks for local people being run like this one the country wouldnt be in the mess it is. It is these entities that the treasury should be concentrating on keeping ,and letting the megafraud banks die a death.
