Culvert 'collapse' at Cumbrian housing estate

Firefighters are trying to pump water away from a housing estate after a culvert is believed to have collapsed.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service says the possible collapse happened shortly before 7am at Elbra Farm Close in Ellenborough, near Maryport.

The area is badly affected by flooding and fire crews are currently working to pump water away from nearby homes.

The Environment Agency is also at the scene and teams are attempting to clear the "blockage".

A spokeswoman could not confirm if the culvert had collapsed and said the blockage could be due to a fallen tree from further up the stream.

The road through the estate is partly flooded but there are no reports of any properties affected by the floodwater.

Firefighters are involved in a number of flooding incidents across Copeland and Allerdale as storms batter the area.

Electricity supplies in Whitehaven are being affected as firefighters are having to isolate supplies before they can pump out the floodwater.
