The 36-year-old celebrity sportsman is accused of driving his Bentley car northwards on the M6 near Linstock at a speed of 87mph – 17mph over the speed limit.

He is accused of committing the offence on January 28 at 12.30pm.

The case was considered briefly by magistrates but adjourned so that Flintoff, who was not in court for the hearing at the Rickergate court complex on Thursday, could appear in person.

Court papers confirmed the defendant’s current address is in Mottram St Andrew, Macclesfield, Cheshire.

It is not known whether Flintoff will be ready to enter a plea when he comes to court.
