A woman has been airlifted to hospital after a crash on a main Cumbrian road.

Firefighters cut two casualties free after the two-car crash on the A595 at Winscales, near Workington.

The female driver of a red Seat Ibiza was airlifted to hospital in Preston.

An ambulance service spokesman said the 43-year-old, from Wigton, had pelvic and abdominal injuries, which were not thought to be lift-threatening.

The female driver of a Ford Focus - who was aged 58 and from Workington - and a male passenger from the Seat have been taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

Station manager Adrian Holme said 15 firefighters from Workington spent about an hour releasing the two drivers.

The injured male was out of the car before firefighters arrived.

The extent of the casualties' injuries are not known.

The road was blocked and drivers were advised to find alternative routes. Cumbria police's traffic team said the road reopened shortly after 5pm.

Anyone who saw the crash should contact the roads police unit on 101.

Meanwhile, a diversion route from the initial accident, near to Workington golf course was temporarily blocked by a second crash.

That three-car crash happened at 2.36pm and involved a blue Peugot 306, a blue Mazda 2 and a BMW, all of which were being driven by women.

A police spokeswoman said there were no injuries reported but child passengers from the Peugeot and BMW were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The road was reopened at 2.48pm.
