Crafts show a beacon for Cumbrian gift hunters

A festive feast of gift ideas is on offer at The Beacon.
The Whitehaven museum has opened its annual exhibition, Alternative Gifts for Christmas, where it is work from nine Cumbrian artists showing a range of items including textile art, paintings and basket-weaving.
The exhibitors include returning artists Laura Tonks and Jakki Barrett, while new for the 2012 show are basket-weaver Helen Elvin, painters Jackie Rogers, Anthony Pendlebury, Phil Cram and James Mitchell, artist Mark Pearce, and textile artist Sue Cosham.
All of the work on show is available to buy and take away. It opens Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am to 4.30pm until January 2, then Wednesdays to Saturdays 11am to 4pm and Sundays noon to 4pm until January 13.
Also in the Harbour Gallery, this weekend, The Beacon is holding a Christmas Art and Craft Fair. It is open tomorrow and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free.
