Council backs Workington super-stadium plan

Plans for a new super-stadium in Workington have moved a step forward this week.
A panel of Allerdale councillors have decided they want to see the development of a new combined sports stadium and leisure facility on the current Tesco site.
Yesterday members of Derwent Valley Task Group met to debate the two options available.
A new super-stadium would become home to Workington Reds and Workington Town.
It would include a state-of-the-art leisure centre - costing nearly £31.5m.
Members turned down the option of a revamp of Borough and Derwent Parks and construction of a community sports complex, costing marginally less at £29.5m.
The council has stressed that yesterday’s decision is not final. The preferred option will be forwarded to Allerdale’s executive committee and full council as a recommendation.
Opinion in the town has been fiercely divided about the plans.
Workington Reds had fears about the viability of a stadium share and wanted to stay put at Borough Park. Town, however, supported it.
Another group which has welcomed the latest progress in the Derwent Valley development is Workington Comets speedway team, whose future at Derwent Park looks to have been guaranteed whatever option is pursued.
listen to the people....SAY NO!!!

the townsfolk who are campaigning to keep open Moorclose Sports Centre & Pools are barking up the wrong tree, they need to use the facilities to get an idea of the diabolical state the place is in,we all deserve this Super Stadium and new facilities i for one am 100% behind the Allerdale Borough Council plan
