The vehicle, partially submerged, was spotted early yesterday afternoon.

It was around 500 metres south of Seascale, and stranded near the high water line.

A team that was working nearby was able to check the car within 10 minutes and quickly established that there was nobody trapped inside.

This was done by a swimmer who was sent to the vehicle with a safety line attached.

It is not yet known how it ended up where it was but Coastguard officials said there are understood to have been no casualties.
