Girl airlifted to Newcastle hospital after hit and run

A young girl has been flown to a north east hospital after a hit and run in west Cumbria.

The 12-year-old, from Cleator Moor, was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle following the incident in the town at about 8.10am today.

She is said to have serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Police say the girl, who was on foot, was struck by a vehicle, which was blue in colour. The vehicle failed to stop.

Part of Leconfield Street was closed while police dealt with the incident.

It was closed between The Square and the Co-Op store.

Motorists were told to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

Witnesses to the collision should call police on 101.
