Christmas Toy Appeal logo

The sleigh is being prepared, the stockings have been dusted off ... and now all we need are the toys.

Here at the News & Star, we are again running our annual toy appeal to ensure no child in Cumbria has to go without this Christmas.

This is the third year we have joined forces with CFM Radio’s Mission Christmas, Cash for Kids appeal and, after a record-breaking year in 2013, we need your help.

Your mission is simple: all we ask is that while doing your Christmas shopping, you drop an extra gift into your basket. These can then be left at one of a number of drop-off points.

At the end of the appeal these are gathered up and distributed to some of the county’s most needy children. In 2013 we helped 3,684 children who would otherwise not have received Christmas presents. News & Star readers donated £100,000 worth of gifts, boosting the overall total to more than £264,000.

Gifts must be brand new and unwrapped. This year there is a particular plea for donations suitable for teenagers, especially boys who are often forgotten.

We are once again appealing for businesses, organisations, community groups and individuals to get behind us. Whether your child is donating a birthday present, your business is willing to be a drop-off point or you are going the extra mile to raise cash to buy toys, then get in touch.

Do decorative lights in town centres make a difference to the way you feel about Christmas?

Certainly. I don't feel the season has started until after the big switch-on

These days I don't think they're worth the expense

Love them - but they shouldn't be switched on until December
