Children dicing with death by jumping from west Cumbrian harbour wall

Children are putting their lives at risk by climbing over safety barriers at a west Cumbrian harbour and jumping into the sea.

The 25 ft plunges, at Harrington Harbour, started as a result of the hot weather.

But council officials fear someone will soon be killed or seriously injured if it does not stop and have now issued an urgent safety warning.

Allerdale Council, which is responsible for the harbour, said they risk landing in shallow water or falling onto the sharp metal edges of the pontoon as they try to jump over it. Some children have also been risking their lives by riding bicycles on the wrong side of the safety barriers.

And youngsters have been seen swimming towards oncoming motor boats, which may not be able to stop or change course quickly enough to avoid hitting them.

Councillor Mike Davidson, chairman of the Harrington Harbour and Dock Board, said: “We are extremely worried for the safety of our young residents. Jumping from 25ft up, there is no way they can know how deep the water below is – they could kill themselves if they land in just a few feet of water.

“There is also the very real danger that if they trip or fail to jump clear of the pontoon they could be torn to shreds by landing on its sharp metal edges – which could kill, cripple or mutilate them.

“Those who attempt to play ‘chicken’ with motorised boats in the harbour are also playing a very dangerous game. These boats can’t stop in the water or change direction as quickly as a car on the road. They may accidentally collide with someone swimming towards them, causing a potentially fatal injury if they get caught in propellers.”

Mr Davidson said they are not trying to ruin anyone’s fun, they just want everyone to stay safe this summer.

“Youngsters under the age of 16 who want to have a swim can do so for free at any of the council’s leisure pools. All they need to do is apply for a Leisure Access Card.
