A woman who had a “problem with drink” stood on the balcony of her Carlisle home and threw knives and scissors at police on the street below.

Nobody was hurt – or even hit – during the trouble outside 51-year-old Kathleen Joan Broughton’s home in Mayson Street, Currock, on June 8.

But the incident landed her before a judge at the city’s Crown Court, where she pleaded guilty to a charge of using or threatening unlawful violence.

Prosecutor Alan Lovett handed the judge a file of photographs of some of the knives and scissors police picked up at the scene.

But he did not give any further details to the court.

Her defence advocate John Smith said the disturbance occurred after the police were called to an incident near her home.

They wanted to talk to her, but she did not want to talk to them so, while intoxicated, started throwing things at them, he said.

“There is a history of contact with the psychiatric services but the problem of drink is the underlying factor,” he said.

Broughton – who once served a nine-month prison sentence for threatening to harm herself with a knife – wanted to be sentenced yesterday. But Judge Peter Hughes QC adjourned the hearing until November 9 for an updated psychiatric report to be prepared.

Broughton was remanded on bail.
