Donna lost her battle with a brain tumour on Tuesday night aged just 29. She leaves behind two sons, aged five and one.

Miller, 28, announced the tragic news on Twitter yesterday morning.

The social networking site was then flooded with messages of love and support for the Blues forward.

The couple had been together since 2003, after a chance meeting on a night out in Glasgow.

Miller was infatuated and proposed three months later. They had been playing pool, when Miller potted a ball and asked his girlfriend to reach into the pocket to get it.

In an article about her wedding Donna recalled: “Instead of a ball, something sparkled in the darkness; a white-gold band encrusted with diamonds. It all felt very romantic.”

Their wedding was delayed following the birth of their first son, but the couple finally tied the knot in an emotional ceremony in Edinburgh in 2008.

The stunning bride described herself as being on cloud nine, and that the tears held off until a reading by her young cousin, pageboy Jack.

Donna said the tissues came out with the final lines: “With faith in each other and love as your guide, as long as forever, you’ll walk side by side. And the shining reminder of how much you care, will lie in the little white-gold band that you wear.”

Condolences have come from across the footballing community, both from CUFC players and supporters and from rival teams’ fans. Grant Holt tweeted: “Sad news about Carlisle player @LeeMillerScotia thoughts go to him and his family. Life is so cruel sometimes.”

Miller’s former clubs have also offered their support. A spokesman for Aberdeen Football Club said in a statement: “The thoughts of everyone at the club are with former player Lee Miller and his family at this sad time.”

Middlesbrough FC tweeted: “Lee Miller's wife has today passed away. Terrible news, I'm sure all Boro fans thoughts are with him today.”

The tributes continue to pour in from those who knew Donna, and from those who were touched by such a tragic loss of such a young mum.

Ross Holms tweeted: “#rip donna my beautiful friend. Will miss you so much on our big day, love you loads. Ross & Nat. x ”

Another friend, whose Twitter name is simply mrs b, wrote: “God has got a true angel now what a beautiful woman and an amazing mum #ripdonna x x”

Lee logged on to the social networking site again yesterday afternoon to show his appreciation for the overwhelming support.

He tweeted: “Thanx everybody 4 ur kind msgs...I've read every1 of them & they mean so much 2 me,my family & Donna’s family. #ripdonna”

Bosses at the club were due to meet today to discuss the devastating situation and any proposals for tributes.
