Carlisle United star opens Cumbria village school's new library

A primary school has opened a new library for its young bookworms.
Youngsters at Houghton School gathered for the opening of the new room yesterday by Carlisle United player Peter Murphy.
Before carrying out his duties, the Blues’ star mingled with parents at a coffee morning which was being hosted to allow the adults an insight into how the library will be used.
Murphy spent more time playing ball with a boy – about the same age as his own son – before taking time out to speak to the News & Star about the importance of books.
“There are a lot of children in deprived areas who can’t read,” he explained. “Children need books and to understand that reading is fun.
“That’s where people like me – a person in the spotlight – need to be showing them how fun it is.”
Murphy is an avid reader himself – currently reading a book called Big Thinking, although a passionate reader of crime fiction such as James Patterson – and admits he is currently enjoying reading the likes of Winnie the Pooh to his young son.
The Houghton School library has been converted from former toilets, and is the epitome of modern technology: every child had their own library card, designed by fellow pupils, which they use to log into the online system.
Each child can then book in and out their own books, search for ideas and even add their own book reviews online.
All 2,500 books in the library have been scanned in by teaching assistants with the help of student librarians.
Lucy McCrone and Victoria Grant, both 10, are two of those responsible for setting up and managing the library.
“It’s really good and I’m really excited,” Victoria said.
Lucy explained that their role will continue, as they help younger pupils use the library.
The technology system extends even beyond the school.
Key stage 2 teacher Jon Stewart explained: “If the children are out in Carlisle and see a book they like, they can log into this system on their smart phone or tablet and scan the ISPN number of the book they like.
“This system will then tell them if it is in the school library – and if it’s not, they can recommend it. I get all the recommendations and can look into whether it is worth ordering it to add to the library.”
The computer system was funded by the school’s parent support group.
