Carlisle United face 'complete rethink' on stadium plans

A report has cast doubt over Carlisle United’s plans for a new stadium.

Have your say

Could not agree more with other forum users when they say that they prefer to shop out of Carlisle. The attitude of some Carlisle sales staff towards potential customers is truly shocking.Carlisle must be the only place where you offer to spend money, only to find that the sales staff are too busy telling each other about their latest squeeze.

In response to Local Residents comments."People stay away from Carlisle on a Saturday for fear of Football violence".What Violence? Two old farmers with a toothless sheep dog,or six or seven hoodie clad youths throwing chips at each other? I have witnessed more anger at a W.I. bake off than at a Carlisle game!

i for one will stop going to the games if the move happens. i bought a house near the ground so it was easier for me to get too games. i know hundreds more that moved to be nearer the ground.

A lot of the comments compare Carlisle with much larger cities, whats the point of comparing us with a city of 3 to 5 times the population? I suspect the club were never serious about moving due to the costs, where was the money coming from? The council report is an easy scapegoat and the club can now blame someone else.

I think its safe to say most of Carlisle's population dont go to matches and would rather have a decent vibrant city centre than an out of town shopping centre and football ground.

How about a new striker first ! We need it right on the pitch then think about new grounds...or even better do up brunton park......

Carlisle united have one of the best playing surfaces in the country, yes the stands are dated but when we have avarage gates of 4500 and this is not likely to climb to much in the coming seasons, surely it makes more sense to develop BP stand by stand. It has all the history for many fans, its ideal for the M6 and station. Remeber there are not two many of classic grounds left now, we are a historic city lets make BP part of the historic quarter!

Caleb, of the 8 'out of town' stadium examples you chose to mention, only 2 (Bolton and Reading) are actually further than a mile from their respective town centres. Stoke, Wigan, Middlesbrough, Derby, Leicester and most notably Sunderland, all have their new stadiums within walking distance of the city centres. I agree with you wholeheartedly that Carlisle needs to progress, not just its football club but also the city in general. And a new stadium is a definite boost. However, you only have to look at what happened to Darlington to realise that out-of-town grounds can be extremely damaging to the support and community feel of a football club.

Any new stadium for Carlisle United must be within a mile of the city centre.

Good to see the comments are still made up by people with nothing better to do
And when using my name not even having the intelligence to spell it correctly

Why not kill two birds with one stone and store nuclear waste under the new stadium? That way the Blues could have an 80,000 ground plus an atmosphere that visiting teams would not relish.

Most clubs that move to out of town stadiums benefit greatly as does the town or city generally.Derby Bolton Reading Leicester Sunderland Middlesbrough Wigan Stoke are just a few examples.Carlisle needs to move into the 21st century because a new stadium can also hold pop concerts and business conferences too.Shops will willingly locate there but typical Labour councils never see the wider picture.Locals should set up an action group and campaign and stand in local elections and get these Labour Party failures out of office.
