Upperby Primary School, Uldale Road, has been graded outstanding in its latest Ofsted report following an inspection last month.

The school, which has 325 pupils, was judged top in all four levels inspectors looked at – pupil achievement, teaching quality, behaviour and leadership.

The latest result sees the school move up a grade from its last inspection when it was ranked good.

Headteacher Jane Hodgson, who marks 10 years at the school this year, said she was “absolutely delighted”.

“I am so proud of everyone here – the staff, children and governors,” she said.

“This is official confirmation and public recognition of the 110 per cent dedication and commitment of the whole school team over several years.

“Families can be assured that we will continue to strive and further develop our school community in the years ahead.”

Inspectors singled out ‘inspirational and imaginative teaching’ which they said relentlessly challenged pupils’ thinking and understanding.

They said the school rigorously checked its performance and had a “you can do it” ethos.

“Teaching is outstanding and the inspiring curriculum brings learning to life,” their report said.

“The pupils behaviour is outstanding. They are safety conscious and play happily and sensibly together. They recognise that ‘bullying hurts’ and report staff are never too busy to listen to a worry or concerns they may have.”

Chairman of governors, William Atkinson, said: “This underlines the tremendous work carried out by the management, governors, teachers, support staff and everyone who helps in school.

“We are particularly proud the report highlights the outstanding behaviour of the children and I would like to thank parents for their help in achieving this.”

Mr Atkinson added that the four new classrooms being built next month would help take the school into “an even more exciting future.”
