Carlisle sandwich thief was 'penniless and hungry'

A man who stole a sandwich from a Carlisle supermarket said he was hungry and had no money.

Jamie Keith Clark, 33, of Mardale Road on the city’s Raffles estate, admitted theft of the sandwich from Sainsbury’s in Caldewgate when he appeared before Carlisle magistrates.

The court heard he was spotted on the store’s CCTV camera. He was known to staff and later arrested.

Clark, who has 40 previous offences for theft and similar offences, told the court: “I had no-money and was waiting for my benefits. I was hungry.”

He was fined £35, with prosecution costs of £85 and a victim’s surcharge of £20.

How far would you go to look at a bird?

Very far. Excited when rare birds set up home here

I watch birds through the window and on TV. That's all

Birdwatching doesn't appeal to me. I'd go a long way to avoid a gull though
