Workmen lifted a steel structure into place as work on the Old Town Hall in Carlisle continues.

Carlisle City Council says work on the historic grade-I listed building is going to plan.

Work began on January 7, and it’s hoped it will be completed by June.

A giant steel structure was hoisted into place at the weekend as scaffolding is put up around the building.

The scaffolding will also be netted, and partly enclosed by boarding to avoid any detritus or dust falling through as the external stonework and roofing work then progresses.

The Tourist Information Centre will be at its temporary home – at the Lodge at the entrance area to Carlisle Cathedral in Castle Street – until April 22.

The move was necessary so that some major repair works to the building could be completed.

Councillor Anne Quilter, the council’s portfolio holder for culture, health, leisure and young people, said: “The tourist information centre’s excellent services will still be available during the Old Town Hall’s construction period, as they will be relocated to a new building close to the city centre.

“The temporary move is necessary and will allow for essential repairs to be undertaken on the roof of one of Carlisle’s most historic buildings and once complete will ensure that the building is watertight and fully protected from the elements.

“The tourist information centre will also be redecorated and there will be improved access for disabled visitors, with a lowered reception counter.”

The council has appointed local building firm, Cubby Construction, to undertake the repairs to the two-storey building and Johnston & Wright are the appointed architects.

As well as roof repairs, the Old Town Hall improvement scheme includes:

• Works to external walls
• Refurbishment and replacement of some windows
• Internal works to the tourist information centre, including plaster and timber repairs
• Upgrade of thermal insulation
• A modified reception counter for customers with disabilities
• New carpets and decoration.
