New jobs at Carlisle food factory welcomed by union

The union representing workers at Cavaghan & Gray in Carlisle has welcomed the decision to give 100 agency staff permanent jobs.
The News & Star reported yesterday that the ready-meals producer was offering permanent contracts to half the 200 workers employed there by the agency Staffline.
Jayne Shotton, area organiser for Usdaw, said: “Many of these workers have already worked for Cavaghan and Gray for two years or more. So it’s really great news for them and something Usdaw has been pushing for.
“It’s also very welcome news for the workforce and Carlisle as a whole as it is the clearest indication we’ve had of [owner] 2 Sisters’ commitment to maintaining production at the site.”
The operation at Durranhill employs 1,000 people, 800 directly and 200 through Staffline. The new contracts will take the number employed directly to 900.
