Carlisle's archives centre opens to public

Carlisle's new £8.2 million archives centre – housing more than one million documents – opens its doors to the public today.

The building, in the former run-down Georgian Grade II listed Lady Gillford’s house on Petteril Bank Road, is now a modern-glass structure. It was funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The archives are now stored in a temperature and humidity-controlled strong-room, which releases inert gas instead of water in the event of a fire, so historical documents would not be damaged.

Cumbria County Council has applied for a licence to be able to hold weddings at the archives centre and, if all goes to plan, they should be able to do this before the end of the year.
