‘Saying it with flowers’ has certainly paid off for one florist this Valentine’s Day after she sold out of her entire stock of red roses in one day.

Aroma Florist, in Carlisle’s Market Hall, sold 400 stems yesterday ahead of the big romantic day today.

Yet Suzanne Hodgson, who has run the stall for the past six years, said it wasn’t her biggest sale for Valentine’s Day and that she had seen busier years.

“A lot of people are going for a single stem rather than a huge bunch,” she said.

“But red roses are always popular at this time of year. Gerboras and lillies are also selling well.”

Diamantes are popular accessories for flower bunches this Valentines, she added, with little ornaments on the flowers.

Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest of the year for Suzanne, and she would normally order only around 20 red roses to last a week.

Last night she was trying to get hold of new stock for today but said that even if she did, she would probably only be able to deal with pre-orders from customers.

A spokeswoman for Inspirations, in Workington’s Finkle Street, said they had been busy selling red roses, which remained a firm favourite. “We’ve been selling a lot of them in here today,” she said. “I couldn’t say how many we’d sold but they are always popular at this time of year.

“We’ve had quite a lot of customers coming in to ask for them.”
