Five years ago 15 regulars from a Carlisle pub set out on a sponsored cycle to help Cancer Research UK.

Fundraisers prepare to set off from the Spinners Arms

The annual fundraiser has snowballed, with more than 70 cyclists from the Spinners Arms in Cummersdale joining the 25-mile bike ride this year.

Together their total sponsorship generated more than £7,000 – money which has now been handed over to the charity’s local representative.

This year’s bike ride – which saw cyclists head from the pub, around Carlisle and back again – took place on July 14. Those taking part included regulars, their families and friends, along with two people walking the route.

The youngest participant was 10 and the oldest 76.

A presentation night was held at the pub last Saturday, when owners Alain and Alison Davis handed over £7,037.43 to Natasha Howe from Cancer Research UK.

Alison said: “We were stunned to be able to hand over a cheque for over £7,000.

“This annual cycle ride is now a major event at the Spinners and is supported fantastically well by our regulars, their families and friends.

“Even though the current climate is really difficult, they did a phenomenal job in raising this much money.

“We’ve raised more than £21,000 for Cancer Research since starting the cycle ride which is an amazing achievement and one we’re very proud of.”

The money will help the charity in its quest to better understand cancer and develop new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease.

Natasha added: “We are absolutely delighted that the cyclists decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK again. They did lots of preparation and it certainly paid off.

“We can’t thank them enough for all their support.

“Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and continues to do so.

“However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters without who we would not be able to fund our vital research.”

Alison thanked all the businesses and organisations who supported the fundraiser.
