The Coach & Horses in Kingstown Road has been hosting the annual charity day on the August bank holiday weekend for 14 years.

Last year it could not go ahead because the pub was closed, but the event was back with a bang on Sunday.

The fundraiser incorporated a football tournament in the afternoon, followed by a charity auction and karaoke night back at the pub.

The charity day is held in memory of Stephanie Wallace, a severely disabled local girl who attended James Rennie School. Sadly Stephanie died 12 years ago, aged 19, but her family and the wider community have continued to raise money for the school which made her so happy.

Her sister Ruth Wallace organised this year’s event. She said it was a really positive way to celebrate Stephanie’s memory and help other children with disabilities.

“It was another fantastic day, with so much support for James Rennie School. Thanks to all local businesses who helped by donating some fantastic prizes,” she added. The auction alone raised £1,900, with prizes including a meal for six at Fantails and a weekend stay at the Crown Hotel, Wetheral.

Throughout the day there were other games, such as spot the ball competitions, which raised more than £1,000, with more still to come in. Ruth said she was delighted to be able to host the event again after a year’s break, and thanked the local community for supporting it.

She added that the total, which will stand at over £3,000, will make a real difference to children at the school.

She also said a special thank you to Coach & Horses managers John and Alison Goodrick for hosting the fundraiser and putting on a buffet for all the footballers and their supporters.
