Carlisle policeman feared for life after woman brandished knife

A police officer had to shut the door of his station after a drunken woman brandished a knife – making him fear for his life.

Isobel Margaret Winder, 24, pulled a kitchen knife from her coat after initially asking for a light, a court heard.

Winder, of St Nicholas Street, off Botchergate, Carlisle, had gone to the station at Shadygrove Road on the city’s Raffles estate at about 9.30pm.

Carlisle Magistrates’ Court was told a sergeant answered the door to find her standing there in a drunken state, asking for a light.

When she did not get one she produced a kitchen knife from her coat and pointed it at the officer.

The court was told the officer tried to speak on his radio.

She then got another kitchen knife from her coat and raised it high in the air.

The court heard the sergeant felt fearful for his life and closed the door.

Another officer heard over the police radio there was someone with a knife at the door.

When he came across Winder she put both knives on the floor. She was arrested and placed in a police van.

She is also said to have pushed an officer.

The court was told Winder had downed a bottle of whisky earlier in the evening. The incident happened on Thursday.

Winder pleaded guilty to unlawfully and intentionally threatening a police sergeant and assaulting a constable.

Magistrates adjourned the case and remanded Winder in custody.

She will appear at Carlisle Crown Court on April 5 to be sentenced by a judge.
