Carlisle mum was drunk in charge of children

A young Carlisle mother was found drunk in her home after police heard a child screaming.

The mother-of-two was three times over the legal drink-drive limit and appeared unconscious when officers found her in the house after being alerted by neighbours.

The 25-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted two charges of child neglect when she appeared before Carlisle magistrates.

Police were called at 7.15am because two women were fighting in a nearby front garden.

When officers arrived they heard a child crying and screaming. They found one child at the bottom of the stairs with the mother at the top, lying on her back, apparently unconscious. Another child was upstairs.

Officers later took a breath sample and found the mother to be three times the drink drive limit. She told police she had drunk wine, vodka and a few pints.

Malcolm Dodds, defending, said this was a case of “short term neglect”. Magistrates adjourned the case until December 4 for reports.
