A man who was arrested after a woman was allegedly attacked in Carlisle on Saturday will enter not guilty pleas to two counts of rape, magistrates heard.

Jamie Smith, 43, of Goodwin Close, Currock, Carlisle, made a brief appearance at the city’s Rickergate courtroom yesterday when the case was sent the Crown Court.

Smith spoke only to confirm his name, age and address. He was represented by the Penrith based defence solicitor Geve Walker, who said his client would be denying the two rape allegations.

Police launched an investigation after getting a report that a woman in her 40s was attacked in an area off Aglionby Street at some time between 11pm on Saturday and the early hours of Sunday.

Magistrates remanded Smith in custody until June 4, when he will be produced at Carlisle Crown Court.
