A man has appeared before a judge after a “deeply unpleasant” incident outside the home of his sister’s boyfriend in Carlisle.

Michael Celmins was arrested after he turned up outside Kenneth Thompson’s house in Whernside, Morton, just before midnight on December 23.

The 23-year-old behaved aggressively in the street before smashing a window in Mr Thompson’s Citroen Saxo with a piece of wood.

At the city’s crown court, Celmins, of Orton Road, was remanded in custody after pleading guilty to affray and criminal damage. He also admitted two unconnected charges of possessing class B drugs – cannabis and amphetamines.

A charge of carrying a kitchen knife during the incident, which he denied, will not be proceeded with.

Tim Evans, prosecuting, said that though a witness had described Celmins brandishing the knife, no such weapon had been found so it would be difficult to prove that he had had one.

“The Crown recognises that knives are serious weapons but this is not a case where there were no other weapons involved,” he said.

“There is no doubt that he used bits of wood as weapons. He was conducting himself in a deeply unpleasant manner.”

Mr Evans said that both Celmins and Mr Thompson had been in trouble before.

“While nobody should be subject to threats and violence as Mr Thompson was, it is fair to say that he would not fall under the description of shrinking violet,” he said.

Celmins will be sentenced later.
