Carlisle man bit girlfriend on thigh in drunken row

A man who assaulted his girlfriend in a drunken row has been given a suspended prison sentence.

David Mallinson, 33, of Lindisfarne Street, off London Road, Carlisle, wrapped his hands around his ex-girlfriend’s neck, verbally abused her and then bit her on the thigh, a court heard.

Mallinson admitted assault by beating on March 9 when he appeared at North Cumbria Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Prosecutor John Moran said: “The victim had been in a relationship with the defendant for about 18 months. There had been a couple of incidents of violence previously which she had not reported to the police.

“The pair had been to the pub. She had had a few drinks and he was drunk and was verbally abusive towards her.

“He put both his hands around her neck. At one point he pushed her forcing her onto the couch.

“She managed to wrap her legs around his body and lock her arms around him. He bit her hard on the left thigh and she squeaked and he stopped.”

Mallinson was said to be “embarrassed and ashamed” of his behaviour.

District judge Gerald Chalk said: “This was a particularly ugly incident that took place in your home where your partner should feel safe.

“A bite is the same as using an offensive weapon.”

He imposed a 70-day prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

Mallinson must also pay £85 costs and £200 compensation.
